Main Street Field Trip

OUR COMMUNITY IS FULL OF HELPERS!
One of the many friendly community helpers we met today!
Our April field trip had us walking all over downtown Russell Springs.  We started our day at the First National Bank. The wonderful ladies there took us on a tour of the vault, showed us how to roll coins, and let us make faces at the security cameras. The kids put their math skills to the test as they answered questions like,

"How many five dollar bills does it take to make $100?"

POP QUIZ!!!

The ladies at the bank made sure we left with lots of goodies.  Thank you, Ms. Minga for the sweet treat bags!

Suckers, KitKats, and bubble gum!

After the bank, we walked to the fire station.  When we arrived the trucks were out and the engines were roaring.  The kids had a wonderful time climbing on and in the trucks.

"Can we turn on the siren?"

The firemen we met were wonderful.  They talked to us about fire safety, showed us the gear they wear, and turned on the lights and sirens for us.

A big thank you to our local heroes who work hard everyday and put themselves in harms way to keep us safe!

Our next stop was City Hall.  The kids met the lovely office staff, found their houses on the big map of Russell Springs (put those map skills to work!), and took turns sitting in the mayor's chair!

The kids also visited the Police Department offices...

and discovered what it is like to be a member of the city council.

After City Hall, we made our way to the Post Office.  We discovered some amazing things!  Did you know that live animals get shipped through the mail? Yes! Baby ducks, chicks, lizards and more. Who knew!  We saw how the mail gets sorted and were amazed that our local postmaster could tell us our last names (he didn't know any of us personally) just by giving him our address. Wow!

Our last stop of the day was The Times Journal, our local newspaper.  Our tour was led by one of our very own homeschool moms!  Ms. Renee showed us around the office and let us check out the archives.

Ms. Renee is an award-winning graphic designer.  She showed the kids some of the things she is presently working on and even let them do some designing of their own.  The kids had a blast playing with Photo Booth.

Check out their work...

We finished the day with a picnic and some playtime at the city park.  It was a little chilly, but still a wonderful time with friends.

Thank you to all the community helpers that allowed us to spend some time with them today.  You are so valuable to our city and we appreciate all you do!

Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who made today's tour of downtown possible!
