Go to the Ant!

"Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.
9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
    When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
    a little folding of the hands to rest—
11 and poverty will come on you like a thief
    and scarcity like an armed man."
Proverbs 6:6-11

This is a good word for homeschooling families.  Homeschool teachers educate without the oversight, direction, and accountability of principals, site-based councils, and school superintendents.  We, like the ant, have no commander, overseer, or ruler.  This is an exciting and terrifying proposition.

On the one hand, we have the freedom to teach to our children's strengths, style, and curiosity.  We can set our own schedules, choose our own materials, and learn wherever and however fits our family best. On the other hand, when exhaustion, boredom, and frustration set in we are in a dangerous position.  With no bell ringing to signal the start of the day we can easily chose to sleep a little longer or check a few more emails.  Who will notice if we knock off early today or put that reading off until tomorrow? What's the big deal if we skip this assignment here and that assignment there?

The writer of Proverbs would say, "Watch out! Poverty sneaks up on you like a prowler!"

Father, I pray for all the homeschooling families in Russell County.  While we may not have earthly overseers we are called to do EVERYTHING as unto the Lord.  Jesus, we choose to teach each day knowing that you are our ruler and Lord and it is for our good and for Your glory to rise early each day and to work with all our hearts. Thank You for the privilege and joy of educating and discipling our children.  Pour out your Holy Spirit on every parent/educator. Stir up gifts of teaching and wisdom.  Grow in us creativity, diligence, passion, and patience.  Bless our families. In Jesus name, Amen.
